Worth a visit – but please with distance
From the 16th to the 18th century, Catholic Solothurn was the residence of the French king’s envoys, the so-called «ambassadors». Beautiful baroque and renaissance buildings, such as the noble Palais Besenval, as well as sacral splendor accompany visitors at every turn – the old town counts eleven churches and chapels and just as many fountains and towers. Between the beautiful monuments, patrician residences and defiant fortified buildings, one can stroll leisurely in the traffic-free old town with its many boutiques and small inns. The city has a cultural program of supra-regional importance, including the Solothurn Film or Literature Days. The variety of museums ranges from the Historical Museum to the internationally awarded Nature Museum, a Stone Museum, the ENTER PC Museum or the Waldegg Castle to the Cabinet for Sentimental Trivia Literature. Finally, one of the largest collections of weapons in Europe can be admired in the museum «Altes Zeughaus».
